Chances are, if you just start the program by typing 4SPACE, you will
see crazy lines zipping around the screen too fast to see well. It looks
much better when it's operating at a lazy pace. To slow it down, use the
/D command line switch with the appropriate delay factor. For example,
you might start with 4SPACE /D1000. Valid values for the delay factor
are from 0 to 9999999. (That's correct: a range of 10 million. I don't
want new, faster machines to make the software obsolete anytime soon.)
Once you find a good value for /D, use that value as an argument for the
demo batch file 4DEMO.BAT. For example, type 4DEMO 1000. 4DEMO.BAT runs
4SPACE with a variety of settings, to show you what it can do. Watch
each setting run for awhile to get a feel for how it works. The patterns
it makes can be as interesting as the shapes moving around the screen.
Later, if you run 4SPACE with lots of lines on-screen at once, (default
is 4 but it goes up to 32), naturally the program gets a bit slower. So
adjust /D accordingly. I recommend running the program from batch files
that feed it your favorite settings.
I wanted to do automatic speed adjustments in 4SPACE. Unfortunately, it
generates lines so fast that the timer functions my compiler supports are
too slow. Just checking to see if there WAS a delay slowed it to a crawl
on older computers. So please be a little patient and find a good delay
value. Then start 4DEMO.BAT and just sit back and watch.
